Mango Summer Salad

Whenever I would visit my grandmother's home, back in Bangalore, one of our family's rituals was traveling down to Maleshwaram 8th Cross to venture into all the local markets. The smell of fresh marigold garlands combined with the slight wafts of various fruits and fresh produce would linger in the air. But the reason for travelling this far was mainly for one purpose. The street-side Raw Mango/Guava that is cut into fairly good size pieces, and served with a generous sprinkle of chili powder and salt. It's a classic South Asian street food snack that blends the flavours of sweetness and tartness from the fruit with a kick of spice from the chili powder.
This Bangalore street food memory is what inspired this Mango Summer Salad recipe. Made with a homemade Chaat Masala and perfect for the Summer season. The flavour combinations of freshly diced Mangoes, Avocados with the crunchy bite from the Red Capsicums along with a homemade Chaat Masala will blow your mind!
You can eat this salad as a snack or as a side topping to any Sandwich/Wrap. At the CTD headquarters, we paired this salad in a Pitta Pocket Sandwich using our own Tofu/Paneer Bhurji recipe by topping our sandwich with this delicious Mango Avocado Salad. We drizzled on top a homemade Cilantro-Mint Raita (recipe coming soon!) with of course a drizzle of Maggie Hot and Sweet Sauce! **ouuu so delicious**
Mango Summer Salad
Servings: 4 individual portions
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients & Utensils
1 Mixing bowl
1 Mixing spoon/spatula
2 Alfonso Mangoes, diced
2 Red Capsicums/Peppers, diced
2 Avocados, diced
Juice of 1 Lemon
1 handful Cilantro/Coriander leaves, chopped
Homemade Chaat Masala
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Powder
1/2 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
1/2 teaspoon Ginger Powder
1/2 teaspoon Amchoor/Dried Mango Powder
1/2 teaspoon Hing/Asafoetida
1/2 teaspoon Cumin Powder
1/2 teaspoon of Coriander Powder
Let's Get Cooking!
1. Add the diced Mangoes, Red Capsicums/Peppers, Avocados into the mixing bowl. Squeeze the juice of 1 lime and combine all ingredients with a spoon/spatula.
2. Then add all of the spices of the Homemade Chaat Masala into your mixing bowl. Don't worry if you can't find or you don't have all of the spices to make Chaat Masala - you can buy ready made Chaat Masala in any supermarket, or a local South Asian/West Indies grocery store!
3. Give all the ingredients a nice toss marrying the diced mangoes, avocados and capsicums/peppers with all of the rich spices. Once well combined, garnish with fresh Cilantro/Coriander leaves.
4. Let this mixture chill in the fridge for 5 minutes. Once the 5 minutes are completed, give your homemade Mango Summer Salad one last mix with a spoon/spatula before taste testing!
Cooking Tip: At this point do a taste test! This will ensure that the salt/spice is to your taste preference!
5. Have your homemade Mango Summer Salad as an afternoon snack, or as a side/topping to any savoury sandwich/wrap!
Notes
1. Variations: Substitute the Chaat Masala for Paprika! This plus a pinch of salt would be incredible in this salad since the Paprika gives it an earthy almost charcoal smell that is so delicious and will compliment very well with the sweetness from the Mangoes.
2. Storage: Store these in a tupperware/glass container, in the Fridge, for up to 2 weeks.
